Plug Production |
|
In the early days of plug chew, manufacturers basically took the leaf chewing tobacco they already produced and added a bit more sweetener, which was typically molasses, to the mix. Once the extra sweetener was added to the chewing tobacco, it would be laid out on a table and stacked to create a sheet about the size of a card table and an inch thick. Then the sheet was compressed until the thickness reached about 3/4 of an inch. Once the mixture set up, it would be cut into plugs the size of a deck of playing cards, packaged in either cellophane or wax coated paper and sold. This process hasn’t really changed since then, the only difference would be the type of sweetener used and the addition of a thin layer of untreated tobacco on the top and bottom. Red Man Plug is made the same way as other plugs and uses the same tobacco that’s used in other Red Man chews. |
